Director of Public Prosecutions

Lloyd Babb SC was appointed the third NSW Director of Public Prosecutions in July 2011. Mr Babb   worked as a solicitor in private practice and for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions before his admission as a barrister in 1995. He was appointed a Crown Prosecutor in 1998. From 2003 to 2005 Mr Babb was seconded as Director of the Criminal Law Review Division and was an Acting Public Defender from 2006 until 2007. He was appointed Senior Counsel and Crown Advocate in 2007. He was also a Member of the Bar Council of the Bar Association of New South Wales between 1995 and 2000.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions

Peter McGrath SC was appointed as a Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions on 3 April 2018. Mr McGrath SC started his career at the Commonwealth DPP, and from there moved to the private Bar. He appeared as counsel assisting the Coroner, and at Police Integrity Commission hearings. Mr McGrath SC was junior counsel for NSW Police during the Wood Royal Commission, and for Corrective Services during ICAC's inquiry into Prison Informers. He then was appointed a Crown Prosecutor, and was with the ODPP for six years before being appointed a Deputy Senior Public Defender.

 

Huw Baker SC

Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions

Huw Baker SC was appointed as an Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions on 12 March 2018. Mr Baker SC has been with the ODPP since 1993, when he started as a legal clerk in the Director’s Secretariat. Mr Baker SC moved on to work as a solicitor and then as a trial advocate in both the Sydney and Western Sydney offices. He was appointed a Crown Prosecutor in 2005, and has appeared in some of our most complex jury trials in the District Court and the Supreme Court and as junior counsel in the Supreme Court, Court of Criminal Appeal and the High Court.  Mr Baker SC was appointed Senior Counsel on 29 September 2017.  Prior to his appointment as Acting Deputy Director, Mr Baker SC was appearing in the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeal.

 


Tanya Smith

Tanya Smith

Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions

Tanya Smith was appointed as an Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions on 21 January 2019. Ms Smith has been with the ODPP for over 20 years, starting as a Level 1 lawyer at Parramatta in April 1998. She has been running trials for over 14 years and was appointed a Crown Prosecutor in January 2007. Ms Smith has been a Deputy Senior Crown Prosecutor for the last three years and has spent a number of years in the Court of Criminal Appeal Unit. Prior to her appointment as Acting Deputy Director, Ms Smith was appearing in the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeal.
